Rwanda records drop in poverty levels

By Eugène Kwibuka/NewTimes

More Rwandans registered a significant improvement in their living conditions despite a marginal drop in poverty levels over the last three years, according National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda (NISR).

Poverty levels dropped by one percentage point from 39.1 per cent in the 2013/14 fiscal year to 38.2 per cent in 2016/17, the statistics body said in its fifth Integrated Household Living Conditions Survey (EICV5), launched on Thursday.

The Director General of NISR, Yusuf Murangwa, said that the slow drop in poverty was due to sustained drought that hit the country in 2016, roiling agricultural output. More

Video: Development in Rwanda

By Nordic African Media Hub

Statement from the Government Spokesperson

Kigali, 22 January, 2018

In these times of global migration crisis, Rwanda wishes to reiterate its firm determination to contribute, as much as possible, to the issue of men, women and children who find themselves on the treacherous road of exile.

Rwanda’s position on migrants, wherever they may originate from, was informed and shaped by a sentiment of compassion towards African brothers and sisters who are today perishing in high seas, sold on the markets like cattle or expelled from the countries in which they sought shelter. Rwanda is ready to help in whatever limited way it could, by welcoming anyone arriving at its borders in need of a home, voluntarily and without any constraint.

In reference to the rumors that have been recently spread in the media, the Government of Rwanda wishes to inform that it has never signed any secret deal with Israel regarding the relocation of African migrants. In this regard, Rwanda’s policy vis-à-vis Africans in need of a home, temporary or permanent, within the country’s means, remains “open doors”.

End.

Statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and East African Community

Kigali, 22 November, 2017: Rwanda, like the rest of the world, was horrified by the images of the tragedy currently unfolding in Libya, where African men, women and children who were on the road to exile, have been held and turned into slaves. Given Rwanda’s political philosophy and our own history, we cannot remain silent when human beings are being mistreated and auctioned off like cattle.

The Government and people of Rwanda stand in solidarity with our African brothers and sisters still held in captivity. Rwanda may not be able to welcome everyone but our door is wide open. We are ready to work closely with the African Union, the private sector, as well as other friends and partners to ensure that we can provide minimum comfort to those in need.

End.
